The Judicial Process

Cases can reach the Supreme Court a few different ways. Most uncommonly, cases actually fall under the original jurisdiction of the Court. Most of the time, however, cases begin as lower court decisions. Usually, the Court issues a writ of certiorari, or a request to the lower courts to send up a case for review. Other cases reach the Court by appeal, which happens when lower courts ask the big guys to review a case that normally deals with the constitutionality of something. In all cases, the Court rejects a good many cases simply due to the fact that they aren't important enough.
